Rowse

As you approach from the north-west, Rowse is the first house in the development. It shares a private entrance with its neighbour, Gin Hill. Rowse takes its name from Herbert James Rowse (1887-1963) who was the architect of the original house on this plot. He went on to become a highly regraded architect responsible for designing Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall and Martins Bank amongst others.

Gin Hill

Gin Hill is the second house as you approach from the north-west and shares a private entrance with its neighbour, Rowse. The original Herbert James Rowse designed house on this plot was called Allendale. Gin Hill takes its name from a lead mine in Allendale, Northumberland. The stone covered mine shaft can still be seen today in Allendale town centre.

Beaumont

As you approach from the south-east, Beaumont is the second house and shares a private entrance with its neighbour, Sinderhope. Taking inspiration from Allendale in Northumberland (the original house’s namesake), Beaumont is named after one of the mining dynasties in the area. The Beaumont family were so successful they owned the mineral rights to almost all of land in the Allendale valley.

Sinderhope

Sinderhope is the first house as you approach from the south-east and shares a private entrance with its neighbour, Beaumont. Again, taking inspiration from the Allendale Valley (and the original house’s name), Sinderhope means ‘southern valley’ so it’s fitting that it’s the name for the most southerly house. Also hope appears in many names in the Allendale Valley as it means a side valley adjoining a main dale.
